The rich history of this city includes sacred monuments such as the Royal Palace of La Almudaina, the imposing Gothic cathedral, the museum of Majorca which is an important, repository of archaeological remains, the Herrerian style Episcopal Palace which is seat of the Diocesan museum or the iconic Bellver castle.

From Palma de Majorca, it is very easy to access the last foothills of the Sierra de Tramuntana situated on the western coast of the island and declared a world Heritage site by UNESCO in 2011, the agricultural area dotted with almond and pine trees displays a natural and human landscape of incomparable beauty. Another place of interest that is close to the capital of the island (17km exactly) is Valldemossa, which owes its well-deserved fame to its charming architecture.

The Roman part of Pollença (or Pollensa), the picturesque streets of Alcudia, the Natural park of S’ Albufera, Canpicafort the evocative castle of Capdepera are located in the north of the island while in the east you can find the spectacular caves of the Drach (coves del drac), located not far from Manacor. All this without forgetting some remarkable examples of Talaiotic culture. While driving through the east of the island, you shouldn´t miss.

Typical dishes of Majorcan cuisine

Although traditionally known for their ensaimada and sobrassada, Majorcan cuisine specializes in meat, fish and vegetables with a generous use of garlic and olive oil. The island has many other delicacies inspired by Mediterranean cuisine we would strongly recommend you to taste during your stay.

As starters, pa amb oli (brown bread without salt, with olive oil and tomato), which is usually accompanied by fonoll mari (manie fennel) and ham. In the area of typical dishes, the island stands out for its inexhaustible cocas (covered with vegetables, meat or fish), cocarrois (stuffed dumplings, scaldum turkey or chicken stew), frit (roasted offal) (An irresistible stew made with egg, meat and vegetables), tumbet (fried vegetables) or trempó (lettuce, tomato, peppers and potato salad). As for pastries, you must try the Gato Mallorquin (a cake made with milk and almond), the Flaó (cottage cheese cake) and small biscuits known as madritxos.

Events in Majorca

The most important Majorcan holidays and festivals

January 20th. Saint Sebastian Day. With bonfires, concerts, and giant papier-mâché figures, Majorcans honor Saint Sebastian, who liberated the island from The Plague. Saint Sebastian is also the patron saint of the island's capital, Palma de Mallorca. The city celebrates with concerts, toasts, and arts in all of its plazas.
February. Carnivals. In Majorca, carnivals are known as Sa Rua. All of the cities and towns celebrate with entertaining parades filled with floats, costumes, street dancing, and common Majorcan foods like ensaimadas, crespells, and empanadas.
May. Moros y Cristianos in Sóller. In Sóller on the second Monday of May, los Moros y Cristianos, or the Moors and Christians, kicks off a series of popular summertime festivities in different Majorcan localities.
June. Corpus Christi in Palma de Majorca. This important and colorful religious tradition takes place 60 days after Resurrection Sunday. Palma is beautifully decorated for the occasion and many activities take place in commemoration.
July – August. Sa Pobla International Jazz Festival. During the summer months, outdoor jazz concerts are held in Sa Pobla's Plaça Major, or main square, on the north side of the island, attracting national as well as nternational artists.
December 31st. Feast of the Banner Placement in Palma. Residents of Majorca honor this historic day which ended Muslim rule in Palma: King Jaume I The Conqueror defeated the Saracens and trampled the Islamic era in Majorca in 1229.
