              Things to see in Costa Adeje (Tenerife)

              The beach is not the only attraction of Costa Adeje: there are lots of other notable architectural sights, such as the Casa Fuerte de Adeje (the Safe House of Adeje). Declared a Place of Cultural Interest, it was erected in the middle of the 16th century, and for more than four centuries this was the economic, political and social centre of the town. Although it was devastated by fire in 1902, its ruins remind us of the fortifications that defended the population from pirates, and also of the Pontes family, a local dynasty that turned Adeje into their dominion.

              Right in front of there we can see the Church of St. Ursula, also declared a Place of Cultural Interest. This construction by Pedro de Ponte y Vergara (the first lord of Adeje) originates from an ancient chapel dating back to the first decades of the 16th century.

              Another important historical site to visit is the old Franciscan convent of Our Lady of Guadalupe and San Pablo, which is another Place of Cultural Interest. Founded in 1679 on the initiative of the first Marquis of Adeje, Juan Bautista de Ponte Fonte y Pagés, it was closed off in 1835. This resulted in the disappearance of the Covent; the church, however, survived and is in good condition.

              One more place of interest is the historical site of Caserío de Taucho (Taucho Chapel). Located at 1,000 m above sea level between the Barranco del Ye and the Barranco de la Fuente, this is one of the oldest settlements in western Tenerife, and has been documented since 1496. Also, there is the archaeological site of Morro Crueso with rock carvings from the time of the Guanches; the aboriginal Berber inhabitants of the Canary Islands.

              On the other hand, one should also remember that Adeje has several areas that belong to the Canarian network of protected natural areas: the special natural reserve Barranco del Infierno, the natural monument of Caldera del Rey and the site of scientific interest La Caleta. Likewise, the area of Adeje also includes a part of Teide National Park, the Corona Forestal Natural Park, the protected landscape of Barranco de Erques, the protected landscape of Ifonche and the site of scientific interest – the cliffs of Isorana.

              Things to do in Costa Adeje (Tenerife)

              For those who wish to unwind, the beaches of Costa Adeje are a great choice. Among the best ones we could mention would be Playa del Duque. Stretching along 700 meters and covered with fine black sand, it boasts the Blue flag distinction which makes it ideal for swimming and sunbathing. Among other places of interest is Playa del Bobo, with white sand and calm water, it is located not far from the centre and is ideal for children. Playa Fañabé is one of the best beaches in the south of Tenerife and one of the best in Costa Adeje and nearby Playa de Torviscas is family friendly.

              Trekking enthusiasts are welcome to enjoy extraordinary hiking trails in Adeje, from the coast to the Teide National Park. Also, nearby is one of the most visited natural landscapes of Costa Adeje: Barranco del Infierno, where one can admire a majestic waterfall.

              On the other hand, in the surroundings one will find many enjoyable leisure facilities, which will help you make the most of your holidays in Costa Adeje, such as water parks, aquariums, camel rides, playgrounds, bowling or paintball. In addition, it is an ideal place to practice water sports, such as scuba diving, sailing, water skiing or take boat trips.

              The many popular festivities of Adeje are another noteworthy experience. One of the most anticipated is San Sebastián, celebrated on the 20th of January. On this day it is traditional to carry the products of the field and animals in front of the Saint to get his blessing. Other religious festivities are the feast of the Local Patron Saint the Holy Lady of St. Ursula and Incarnation, between the 23rd of September and the 2nd of October. During this period plenty of sporting, folkloric and religious events are held, such as the Descent of the Virgin.

              Of course, this short list of events would be incomplete without Easter. Every Good Friday at midday a procession is held, which engages more than 300 amateur actors. In Grande de Adeje, all the way from the Church of Saint Ursula to Plaza de Cruz del Llano, every space is turned into a setting that represents what is believed to be the last moments of the life of Christ.

              Costa Adeje’s beaches are some of the best in Tenerife, as they are unspoilt and calm, and offer facilities and services for a nice family holiday as well as for adventure or leisure trips with friends or with your partner. The coastline on the south of Tenerife features 4km-long sand beaches with calm waters. They are Troya, La Enramada, La Pinta, Ajabo, El puertito de Adeje and Playa Blanca, among others.

              Main beaches in Costa Adeje:

              • Fañabé beach: Fañabé is one of the main beaches of the southern part of Tenerife and the best on Costa Adeje. It has good facilities for bathers, is close to the town centre and has a long extension of fine sand. It is popular with families with children and has almost no waves, as it is in a bay protected by a jetty. The beach promenade is lined with fashion shops.
              • El Bobo beach: El Bobo, a white sand beach with calm water integrated into the town centre in Costa Adeje, is one of the best beaches for kids in Tenerife. It has all kinds of facilities, bars, and everything you need for a family holiday.
              • El Duque beach: An uncrowded blue flag bearer, this beach is in an exceptional natural setting. El Duque is well known for its fine black sand and its sea promenade, which connects it to eight other beaches on Costa Adeje.               • Torviscas beach: The dark colour of the sand lends this beach a character of its own, different from that of the other beaches on Costa Adeje.               Events in Costa Adeje

              Costa Adeje has a long list of popular events and festivals that guarantee fun for all ages throughout the year. Genuine fiestas in Costa Adeje give visitors a unique chance to get deep into the local traditions. From Saint Sebastian’s Day to the feast of Saint Ursula or the theatre festival held in November, there is a lot to do in Costa Adeje.

              Major events in Costa Adeje

              • January – Feast of Saint Sebastian in La Caleta: This small fishing village on the east cost of Costa Adeje inaugurates the calendar of fiestas in the area with a traditional celebration honouring Saint Sebastian. Two days filled with activities and plans for all ages on 19 and 20 January.
              • April – Book Fair: Numerous writers from the island of Tenerife gather in Plaza de César Manrique to attend the leading literary event of the year in Costa Adeje. The book fair oozes creativity and poetry for locals and out-of-towners to enjoy.
              • May – Our Lady of Fátima Day at Los Menores: This neighbourhood of Adeje holds a nice procession where flowers and a recently restored statuette of Virgin Mary take to the streets to be greeted with applause and enormous devotion.
              • Late May – Arts and crafts fair: In late May, Plaza de España in Adeje accommodates a host of stalls with traditional arts and crafts. Visitors can choose from exclusive pieces from the Canary Islands or houseware from houses or farm houses in Costa Adeje.
              • July – Adeje University summer school: Every year, University of La Laguna and Adeje Town Hall organise courses and workshops on subjects like architecture, engineering, social science, law, humanities… The atmosphere is nice and relaxed.
              • 16 July – Feast of El Carmen and Los Olivos: The feast honouring Our Lady of El Carmen in Costa Adeje starts off with the feast of Los Olivos. The feast lasts from early July until the El Carmen’s day. There is a procession of the image of the Virgin and Patroness of sailors, carried to the shrine of La Viña. There are also important maritime processions in La Caleta and Los Cristianos.
              • September –Fañabé Festival: Held to commemorate Our Lady of the Fields, this festival lasts for several days and has activities for kids, traditional music, street parties, sports and typical parades.
              • November – Adeje Theatre and Dance Festival: The Adeje Theatre and Dance Festival on the south of Tenerife has been held for more than five years now, and makes an important event centred on performing arts in the Canary Islands. All types of theatre plays and performances for all ages come to the many stages in Adeje.
              • 12 to 21 October – Feast of Saint Ursula: This is the major fiesta of Adeje. Every year, the town hosts a great fiesta that attracts people from all over the island of Tenerife. There are nice processions, typical dresses, the figure of Our Lady of the Incarnation coming down the street, local sports tournaments, a beer fest, music performances and comedians on stage.

              Extreme sports at Costa Adeje

              Costa Adeje can be a paradise for sports lovers. Water sports on Fañabé and Torviscas beaches, paragliding and hiking over Los Gigantes cliff or Mount Teide, playing golf while enjoying views of the Atlantic Ocean. You can do the sport you wish in a safe environment guaranteed.

              • Paragliding in El Infierno gorge: Extreme adventure is guaranteed in Costa Adeje by paragliding schools offering the chance to fly over a spectacular landscape on South Tenerife from El Infierno outcrop in Adeje to the extensive black sand beach.               • Hiking up Mount Teide: The Visitor Centre at Teide National Park offers six guided hiking tours of different difficulty levels and durations. Or you can go walking on your own to the top of Mount Teide, Siete Cañadas, Montaña Majúa, etc. There is a nice trail that runs from Los Gigantes cliff to San Juan beach.
              • Golf in Costa Adeje: Golfers will love playing their favourite sport while admiring the views of the Atlantic Ocean in an overwhelming volcanic landscape in Costa Adeje.
